From 1990 to 2004 David was member of the federal parliament for Goldstein, and from 1996 was a minister in the Howard government, including Cabinet portfolios of Education, Youth Affairs, Training, and Environment. Before entering parliament, he was Senior Lecturer in Political Science at Melbourne University 1975-79 and Professor of Politics at Monash University 1979-90.
After leaving parliament he has been Professor and Vice-Chancellor鈥檚 Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Fellow of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government, board member of the Grattan Institute for Public Policy, and of the Robert Menzies Institute, Chair of the Australian Heritage Council and of the Museum of Australian Democracy.
He has written extensively on political liberalism and political ideas, including a multi-volume history of political liberalism in Australia.
