Ian McPhee AO

Ian McPhee AO was born in Sydney on 13 July 1938. He earned a Law degree from the University of Sydney and later completed a Master鈥檚 in Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Hawai鈥榠 and Yale University. He practised as a barrister in both Sydney and Papua New Guinea.

In 1974, McPhee entered the Parliament as the Member for Balaclava (renamed Goldstein in 1984). He served as the first Minister for Productivity in the Fraser Government, also acting as Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on the Status of Women. He later held portfolios including Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and Minister for Industrial Relations.

From 1990 to 1996, he was a partner at Corrs Chambers Westgarth, including a role as Director of Industrial Relations at Telstra.

McPhee has served on various boards, including CARE Australia and the ABC, and was a member of the Review of the Victorian Upper House. He is also the author of a historical novel about the First Anglo-Burmese War of 1826.
